Driven approx 1,000 miles to Leominster for the auction; fully
restored in 2018
Endearingly unconventional and
effortlessly evocative of open-air motoring, the Citroën Méhari remains one of
the most distinctive vehicles of its era. Lightweight, practical and full of
character, it has become a cult classic in recent years.
This 1975 example has been in the current ownership since 2015. He
has told us that it was the subject of a comprehensive restoration
completed in 2018. Notably, it features a fully galvanised chassis and
spaceframe—front, centre and rear—providing durability and longevity well beyond
many of its contemporaries.
Powered by the
charming and characterful 602cc engine, fitted with a heavy flywheel and single
choke carburettor, the Méhari delivers a driving experience that is both simple
and possibly slightly
scary. While the mileage is not recorded—unsurprising
given the car’s age and restoration—it has proven its usability, having recently
completed a 1,000-mile journey from France to the UK to attend this
auction.
Mechanically, the car has been sensibly
improved, including a modified gearbox incorporating a reconditioned disc brake
setup, complemented by renewed braking components. The engine oil was changed
approximately 1,000 miles ago prior to the journey. There are no invoices on
file for the work done but it is clear that restoration work has taken
place.
The car is equipped with two half doors
and a rear seat with plastic cover, in keeping with its utilitarian yet playful
design. The rare hard top may be available from the vendor after the auction by
separate negotiation.
Fully UK registered as OBU
737P since 2018, this well-restored Méhari represents a rare opportunity to
acquire a usable and highly collectable classic—ideal for leisure use, events,
or simply enjoying on sunny days.
