Showing just 27,719 miles; manual
column-change gearbox; 35 years of dry barn storage; running engine with
external fuel supply; rewarding recommissioning project
Believed to date from circa
1953-1954, this attractive Standard Vanguard 20S Series II is identified by
chassis number V222129DL and body number S709698R. The Vanguard Series II range
was introduced in 1953, with the chassis sequence suggesting this example
originates from the early years of production. The model is powered by
Standard's robust 2,088cc four-cylinder petrol engine, driving through a manual
gearbox with the desirable column-change gear selector, a feature very much in
keeping with the car's period character.
The car is offered fresh from approximately 35
years of dry barn storage, having been stored alongside several other classic
vehicles. According to the vendor, the car was laid up many years ago and
appears to have been carefully prepared prior to storage. Inspection suggests it
may have been winterised before being put away, with evidence of protective oils
and grease still apparent, perhaps explaining its notably well-preserved
condition.
Wearing the numberplate JTH 987 however
currently the vendor can't locate any paperwork for the vehicle, should any come
available then it will be passed on.
Showing just 27,719 miles, the Vanguard appears
to be a remarkably honest and solid example. Whilst the mileage cannot be
warranted, it would seem broadly consistent with the overall condition of the
vehicle. Importantly, from what we can see, the car appears to have survived
extremely well structurally, offering a strong basis for either sympathetic
recommissioning or preservation.
For the purposes of our video, an external fuel
supply was connected, and we are pleased to report that the engine started
readily and ran as demonstrated. Having spent such a lengthy period off the
road, prospective purchasers should naturally expect a program of mechanical
recommissioning prior to regular use.
Included within the sale are two spare hubcaps,
a quantity of spare parts and a new stainless-steel exhaust system, all found
within the boot and accompanying the vehicle.
Increasingly rare today, particularly in such
apparently original condition, this charming Vanguard represents a wonderful
opportunity to acquire a highly authentic example of one of Britain's most
important post-war family saloons. Honest, largely un-spoilt and fresh from
long-term storage, it offers considerable appeal to enthusiasts looking for a
rewarding recommissioning project.
An apparently very solid and highly original
Standard Vanguard 20S Series II, showing just 27,719 miles and emerging from
some 35 years of dry barn storage. Running from an external fuel supply and
supplied with useful spares, it presents an increasingly rare opportunity to
acquire an honest and appealing 1950s British
saloon.
