UK-registered 1992; rare early electric
microcar;
barn-stored example with lift-up canopy
Finished in bright red and equipped
with the distinctive full lift-up roof canopy, this charming little
Mini-El represents one of the earliest
chapters in modern electric vehicle history. Built in Denmark in the late 1980s
and imported into the UK in small numbers, the Mini-El was an innovative
three-wheeled microcar aimed at
economical, zero-emission urban transport long before
such ideas became fashionable.
This example was manufactured in 1989 and first
registered in the UK in 1992, retaining its original blue V5 logbook, suggesting
long-term ownership and very little
administrative disturbance over the years. Discovered as a barn find, it appears
complete and largely untouched, offering an excellent basis for sympathetic re
commissioning or full restoration.
The lightweight plastic monocoque body has
survived storage well, and the trademark forward-hinged canopy still lifts to reveal
the single-seat cockpit and simple electric
drivetrain beneath. As with most long-stored EVs of this era, the
batteries will require replacement, and the mechanical and electrical systems
should be assumed to need full assessment before use.
With surviving Mini-Els now few and far between
— especially UK-registered examples — this represents a rare opportunity
to acquire an early and increasingly collectible electric microcar. Whether
restored for quirky urban motoring or preserved as an important piece of EV
history, it promises to be a rewarding and unusual project.
Included are a number of spares as
pictured and an original cover.
